southern part of the country in the helmand province. the base is next to camp leather neck which houses u.s. marines. all of the casualties appear to be americans. prince harry was a mile away from the base when the attack happened and was not hurt. the taliban recently announced they plan to capture or kill prince harry during his latest deployment to afghanistan. also developing this morning protests are spreading beyond the middle east as more muslims respond to an antiislam video. demonstrators took to the streets in more than 20 countries in nearly 40 cities around the world with protests in places like malaysia, indonesia, pakistan, and india remaining mostly peaceful while more violence is erupting in the middle east. at least seven have been killed and dozens injured in the protests. other western embassies such as the german and british consulates have also come under fire in sudan. american schools and fast food chains are also being targeted.

the bodies of four americans killed in one of the first embassy attacks in libya earlier this week are now back home. president obama and secretary of state hillary clinton attended a ceremony for slain ambassador chris stevens and his three colleagues at the joint base andrews yesterday. they were killed when armed protesters mobbed the u.s. consulate in benghazi tuesday the anniversary of september 11. the president vowed to find those responsible. >> we will bring to justice those who took them from us. even in our brigrief, we will b resolute, for we are americans and we hold our head high. >> the president also met privately with family members of the four men. new this morning a man is fighting for his life after a double shooting in southeast. this happened a little after 2:00 this morning on the 1200 block of 12th street not far from navy yard. police say they arrived to find two men shot, one in the head.

the other man was still alert and his injuries are not considered life threatening but both have been taken to a nearby hospital. so far no arrests have been made. d.c. police are offering a thousand dollars reward for information on a sexual assault that happened near a metro station. investigators say last thursday night this man in this surveillance video wearing the white polo was followed -- followed a woman out from the dean wood metro station to 45th place northeast. there he allegedly attacked and sexually assaulted her at gun point. police have put together a composite sketch of the person they're looking for and are asking anyone with information to come forward. now to a story you saw first on 4. a brazen robbery at a high end boutique in chevy chase. the second such crime in a month. witnesses say four men stormed into saks jandel on wisconsin avenue and ran off with their arms full of designer handbags. they jumped into a car but as one witness told our own pat collins a store employee was not going to let them get away easy. >> she runs out, runs in front

of the car, and she does like this. and they took -- the car was moving. i said oh, please don't hit her. then she runs to the door and she is trying to hold the door. >> last month a similar robbery was reported at saks 5th avenue just across the street. police say the suspects got away with $75,000 worth of designer handbags. police are investigating if these two crimes are connected. a local undocumented immigrant who says he was scammed out of his lottery winnings is now being held by immigration officials. ramone ortiz hit the lottery in maryland two years ago. he doesn't have a social security number so he says he asked a co-worker to claim the $450,000 payout. well, he claims that co-worker kept all his money. ortiz is now suing for fraud. his attorney says the fraud case will move forward while ortiz' fate is still being decided. officials at the national institutes of health say a drug resistant super bug killed a 7th

person. the bug killed a minnesota boy who had complications from a bone marrow transplant. doctors detected the bug at the nih clinical center last year. 17 people have been infected since last august when a new york woman was admitted to the hospital unknowingly carrying the disease. d.c.'s irving forestry administration is working with district residents to help get rid of mosquitos. residents around 10th and m streets northwest are worried the mosquitos could bring west nile virus. the urban forestry group says one of the causes for the bugs is these things, the canopy keepers. the slow drip systems help water trees around the area. d.c. officials are reminding those who helped take care of the trees to clean out the basins once a week to get rid of all the standing water. today hundreds of people will head to northeast washington to one of the most popular and eclectic events of the year, the h street festival. but this year the festival will serve as the unveiling for a new

three-mile-long heritage trail in that neighborhood. news 4's derrick ward joins us from h street with more on the big unveiling. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. there is lots of preparation under way here along h street and of course this festival has always been a draw. it's an annual event and celebrates the past, present, and future of this corridor. there is something more talking about the past now that will be the opening of the heritage trail. there are a lot of significant spots. maybe on the eastern end you can talk about how the british crossed the street as they were on their way to sack the capitol in 1814 during the battle of bladensburg. on the other end you have the arena that used to be the home of roller derby, wrestling, and of course the first live venue played by the beatles right after their appearance on the ed sullivan show. lots of things in between and lots of personal memories for folks along the h street corridor. and joining me now is jane libby. she is a historian for d.c.

tourism culturalism. talk about this heritage trail. the idea was to get people off the mall? >> that's how we started out. we thought tourists come to d.c. every year and go to the mall and don't see the rest of the beautiful city. we started heritage trails to give them a way to get off the mall, have a self-guided experience, and learn something about us. but what we discovered over time very quickly is that this is about building community pride and bringing communities together over their shared history. >> reporter: and these trails reflect the community's identity of itself don't they? >> absolutely. you know, our trails are unique in the country. i'm a historian and i don't come in and say, okay. you're going to have a heritage trail because you have a really interesting neighborhood. the community comes to me. and we spend the first year of work on these trails talking to folks in the community, people who live here now, people who lived here before, getting their stories and adding to it, the history we research. >> reporter: excellent. there are lots of key points here and of course a lot of local connections. even the channel 4. i want to show you a picture here.

employee so how do you handle that? >> it's a work environment. we don't have family pictures in the office. it's really we're there to work and everyone has their delegated position. >> linda, how do you handle it? your little boy -- >> telling me what to do. >> exactly. how does that go over? >> i have such a smart son. i listen to him. he is the scientist. he formulated such a wonderful product. youth infusion. when he comes up with ideas i respect what he says. i'm more the business, p.r., advertising person and he is the scientist, the brains behind our product. >> i know you also have a column on your website. >> yes. >> where you answer questions from people about how to make the family dynamic work in an office setting. let's go over some of the tips you give out. we know you -- what is the first one? divided roles. what does that mean? >> he is more scientific, the

product development person, the spokesperson. i've been in business a long time so i am more the business behind it. we have divided roles. >> and then seeking outside advice. what is that about? >> seeking outside advice. you certainly don't want to always listen to family or friends because they will tell you what you want to hear so it is important to take a third party or someone that really doesn't know the business or doesn't know you personally and get that person's advice. >> you already mentioned this. no family pictures in the office. you always see family pictures in everyone's office. >> on my desk i have some. >> on the desk. not through the hallways or the fax machine, common areas. >> right. >> doesn't look like our family room at home. >> then the yin and yang? >> that is more of a personality dynamic. i am a little more reserved, analytical. my mother is type a so she's great when it comes to contacting buyers and being very persistent. i'm good when it comes to contacting the lab and actually perfecting the formula.

firefighters are battling a fast moving wildfire in los angeles this morning that could threaten some huge homes. it broke out yesterday afternoon

and has already burned more than 70 acres. located in the foothills near the 405 freeway, smoke snarled rush hour traffic last night and forced the evacuation of the getty center art museum. the area is also known for its large mansions. more than 200 firefighters and five helicopters and planes are battling the blaze which is only about 40% contained. very dangerously close to residential areas. >> and the last thing they need is some strong winds because that'll just flare that up. >> we have a little fire danger here as well. it's been fairly dry for most of the year. we are 7 inches behind in rainfall. a little dry, very low humidity and a gusty wind. if you're going outside today if you can hold off on burning any of your outdoor stuff or maybe for another week or so, let us get more rain or let the wind die down that would be a good idea. and rather than spend the day burning stuff in the yard spend the day sitting outside enjoying the weather. why work on a day that's clearly

there. nothing showing up on radar. the nearest rain drops to us are now across parts of cape cod. they're moving out to sea and are all associated with a weather front that switched our wind around from south to north about 2:00, 3:00 in the morning. the nice breeze will be with us for the rest of the day. but as the evening approaches high pressure settles on in. that in combination with the clear skies will help take the wind away and allow for a chilly to cool to chilly start tomorrow morning. probably upper 50s in town and bayside but there will be 40s on the map out to the west of the city by tomorrow morning. then tomorrow, we start off a-okay. bright sunshine. but fading sunshine by late tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow evening. ahead of the rain chances which arrive here probably around about the time you start to go back to work and school on your monday morning. once the rain starts on monday it could last all the way through at least tuesday night maybe even into wednesday morning so expect a lot of rain. it'll be breezy as well. more important than anything else, i think areawide will average 1 to maybe as much as 3

followers. he was 92 years old. well, it looks like chicago students will be heading back to school on monday. the president of the city school board says the district and the union have agreed on a framework of the deal and expect students to return to class monday. the teachers went on strike earlier this week complaining about the evaluation system and class sizes. union delegates are expected to vote tomorrow on whether to agree to terms and end the strike. hockey fans, you might want to cover your ears. the nhl is preparing to lock out its players at midnight tonight. the two sides have not come to an agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement. the current one expires tonight. the league is asking the players to take a smaller cut of revenue. regular season games are scheduled to start in early october. despite the impending lockout the capitals lock up one of their young stars. >> and the nats battle. a hated division rival. carol maloney has it all in this

reveals 45% of registered voters view the president favorably compared to 41% who view him unfavorably. that's a reversal from the same question in august when he had a higher unfavorable rating. as for mitt romney 33% of voters have a positive view of him while 40% have an unfavorable opinion of him. pro choice advocates in virginia are protesting rule changes that could shut down many of the state's women's health clinics. yesterday the virginia board of health approved a set of building regulations for women's health clinics. they required the clinics to comply with newer architectural standards for hospitals. supporters say the regulations will ensure the safety of women but opponents say forcing clinics to comply with costly renovations could put them out of business. a security guard who took a bullet wrestling a gunman to the ground is being honored for his bravery. leo johnson received a faith, family, and freedom award from the family research council last night. johnson was shot in the arm last month after floyd lee corkins ii

tried to get into the building with a handgun. johnson says in that moment he was not afraid. >> actually probably never been more calm. i realized the situation and knew i had to act. if not for the lord and his strength and giving it to me, i wouldn't be here before you guys today. >> corkins will be back in court on october 1st. johnson hopes to be back at work in a couple of months. today a local martial arts academy hopes to raise money for the family of a murdered maryland teen while also promoting self-defense. full circle martial arts will hold a self-defense seminar today to support the family of amber stanley. amber was shot to death while sleeping last month when a gunman broke into her family's home. the seminar will be held at amber's high school in springdale. the cost is $20 and all proceeds will be donated to amber stanley's fund. there have still been no arrests made in amber's murder. friends and fellow students of another prince george's county teen killed on his way to school are making sure his life is not

forgotten. students, staff, and family paid tribute to the memory of markel ross yesterday and released light blue balloons on the football field at central high school in capital heights. that was his favorite color. marckel was shot and killed earlier this week on his way to school. >> holding on, praying, if it wasn't for all my support i don't know if i could make it. it's hard. it's hard. i want to know who did this to my son and why. >> police also went to back-to-school night on thursday at central high to talk to parents about the case. today montgomery county police will resume their investigation of a drowning in the potomac river. investigators say a man entered the water near river bend park in virginia and waded in the middle of the river yesterday. he then got trapped beneath a rock upstream from great falls. police have not yet identified the victim but they say there doesn't seem to be any evidence

families in guatemala are being allowed to return to their homes this weekend as massive volcano appears to have stopped erupting. it's one of the world's most active volcanos in this most recent eruption was one of the biggest in 40 years. the eruptions are also attracting lots of tourists who want to see the volcano up close. so far there have not been any reports of injuries from the volcanic eruptions. just extraordinary pictures coming out of there. i could see why you'd want to go see it. just not right now. >> i can see it right there on the monitor. >> more than good enough. >> those people sweeping up probably ash. >> absolutely. what a mess. >> yeah. it lands like snow, very fine particulate ash. the minute you get any water on it turns essentially concrete. so important to get it off the roads before it gets rained on. >> yikes. today i heard you break out the kite flying line. >> anything you want to do

the attack happened overnight at camp bastion which is in the southern part of the country in the helmand province. the base is next to camp leather neck which houses u.s. marines. nato officials say all of the casualties appear to be americans. prince harry was about a mile away from the base when the attack happened. he was not harmed. the taliban recently announced they plan to capture or kill prince harry during his latest deployment to afghanistan. also developing this morning protests are spreading beyond the middle east as more muslims respond to an antiislam video. demonstrators have taken to the streets in more than 20 countries and more than 40 cities around the world. protests in places like malaysia, indonesia, pakistan, and india remain mostly peaceful while more violence is erupting in the middle east. at least seven people have been killed and dozens more injured in the protests. other western embassies such as the german and british consulates have also come under fire in sudan. american schools and fast food chains are among those being

targeted. the bodies of the four americans killed in one of the first embassey attacks in labia earlier this week are now back home. president obama and secretary of state hillary clinton attended a ceremony for slain ambassador chris stevens and his three colleagues at joint base andrews yesterday. they were killed when armed protesters mobbed the u.s. consulate in benghazi on tuesday on the anniversary of september 11. the president vowed to find those responsible. >> we will bring to justice those who took them from us. even in our grief, we will be resolute for we are americans and we hold our head high. >> reporter: the president also met privately with family members of the four men. new this morning, a man is fighting for his life after a double shooting in southeast. it happened a little after 2:00 this morning on the 1200 block of 12th street not far from the navy yard. police say they arrived to find two men shot.

one was shot in the head. the other man was still alert and his injuries are not life threatening. both have been taken to a nearby hospital. so far no arrests have been made. d.c. police are offering a thousand dollars reward for information on a sexual assault that happened near a metro station. investigators say last thursday night this man in the white polo followed a woman out from the dean wood metro station to 45th place northeast. there he attacked her and sexually assaulted her at gun point. women around the metro station say there is not enough of a police presence to stop would be criminals. >> i always said there needs to be more security. when i come in here someone was following me and talking to the police and just the second time i got followed. >> the times that i do come through, i do see cops usually there is some type of incident. >> police have put together a composite sketch of the suspect and they're asking anyone with information to please come forward. now to a story you saw first

on 4. a brazen robbery at a high end boutique in chevy chase. the second such crime in a month. witnesses say four men stormed into saks jandel on wisconsin avenue and ran off with their arms full of designer handbags. they jumped into a car but as one witness told our own pat collins a store employee wasn't going to let them get away easy. >> she runs out, runs in front of the car, and she does like this. and the car was moving. i said please don't hit her. then she runs to the door and is trying to hold the door. >> last month a similar robbery was reported at saks 5th avenue just across the street. police say the suspects there got away with $75,000 worth of designer handbags. police are investigating to see if perhaps the two crimes are connected. some d.c. residents who are dealing with swarms of mosquitos could soon get some help from the district's urban forestry administration. the group says a big problem for residents around tenth and m

streets northwest is because of the canopy keepers. the slow drip system helps water trees around the area. d.c. officials are reminding those who take care of the trees to clean out these basins once a week to get rid of the standing water. today one of the most popular and eclectic events kicks off. we're talking about the h street festival. but this year the six block festival will serve as the unveiling for a new three mile long heritage trail in the neighborhood. news 4's derrick ward joins us from h street with more on the unveiling. derrick, any pat collins sightings? he was talking about this all day yesterday. he is going to be out there probably in a crazy hat. >> reporter: oh, yeah. i showed you the picture of his grandfather who was a locomotive engineer. and pat actually grew up down on the western edge of h street. his dad was a doctor down there. i'm told there is a marker with a picture of pat as a child on it watching television. there are so many ironies in that but that's one of the other reasons to come down here. you know what i'd like to do when i'm in the h street quarter

i like to look at the roof line. that view probably hasn't changed in centuries, the victorian tops and the steeple. at street level you see modern h street, some of the shops that have opened. it still pays homage to the history of the corridor. that is what part of this festival is all about today, the unveiling of the h street heritage trail. that is a 3.2 mile route with 18 illustrated markers. it features personal histories and pivotal periods in the period of this corridor and the city in general. the points are chosen by past and present residents of the area. so these markers represent a neighborhood's identity of itself. >> our trails are unique in the country. i'm a historian and i don't come in and say okay. you're going to have a heritage trail because you have a really interesting neighborhood. the community comes to me. we spend the first year of work on these trails talking to folks in the community, people who live here now, people who lived here before. getting their stories and adding

thee an alexandria man will spend 30 years in prison for trying to blow up the u.s. capitol. he pled guilty earlier this year and volunteered for a suicide mission in february arranging to pick up a vest laced with explosives but his al qaeda connections were actually undercover fbi agents. 30 years was the maximum sentence under his plea deal. a local undocumented immigrant who says he was scammed out of winning the lottery ticket or a winning lottery ticket is now being held by immigration officials. ramone ortiz hit the lottery in maryland two years ago. because he doesn't have a social security number he asked a co-worker to claim the $450,000 payout. he claims that that co-worker kept the money. ortiz is now suing for fraud. his attorney says the fraud case will still move forward while

tomorrow on sunday make sure you check out music at the kennedy center's millennium stage. the group specializes in traditional music from southern, vera cruise, mexico. the concert starts at 6:00. that's it for this week's "free in the dmv." enjoy. this morning we are learning that a 911 outage during june's strong storms was even more widespread than initially thought. according to "the washington post" 25 emergency call centers lost service on june 29th, more than originally reported. a new report also concedes that verizon's system was built to with stand even stronger storms but that maintenance and testing procedures failed. more than 2 million people in northern virginia alone were affected by the outage. restoring power faster after another major storm like june's derecho may not happen any time soon. utilities met with the maryland public service commission yesterday and told them that june storm response was acceptable in their eyes.

welcome back. a north carolina teacher is in hot water for morking her students on facebook. students say their english picture posted pictures of their homework circling mistakes and adding harsh comments.

the school board suspended the teacher with pay while they investigate. in other news some new publications are now saying they will run scandalous photos of the duchess of cambridge. >> the royal family is already in the process of suing the french magazine that first published the topless photos of princess kate in hopes of quelling the scandal. nbc's ian williams has more on the suit. >> reporter: the royal couple will take legal action under french privacy law. the laws are pretty tough and it does appear that the publication of the photographs is in breach of that law. but the maximum fine, about $60,000, is not terribly high and recent cases have been far less than that so the magazine may be calculating that they stand to benefit far more by their increase in circulation and the higher profile than any penalty that is eventually imposed on them. royal watchers here in london are saying they've never seen the palace so angry. spokes people describing this as reminiscent of the worst acts of

the era against princess diana. >> i mean it's just diana all over again. and she is such a lovely woman and such a nice person. >> i don't think it's right they should be publishing that kind of thing but given who she is i think anything she does is going to be scrutinized and published. >> reporter: the photographs, which were taken on a long lens during a holiday in the south of france were haukd around london but no publication here as touched them and they're unlikely to. clearly it's just the french magazine and the royal couple is extremely angry and determined to push this legal action. back to you. >> all right. the story doesn't end there in the last few hours we've learned an italian gossip magazine owned by former premier silvio berlusconi says it will publish the photos on monday. berlusconi's publishing house also owns the french magazine that first published the pictures. the company says they do not fear legal action and that the photos were tasteful and don't hurt kate's image. i'm sure the family disagrees.
